I just cleaned my fridge/freezer combo and my 5' high freezer today! I swear you must have been reading my mind. BUT-with a family of 6, I do keep mine pretty well stocked. About once a month, I do an inventory of everything down to the spices. It takes me a few hours, but it's so worth it! I discover things I forgot I had. As for left overs-kids will eat pretty much anything under a pie crust or on a pizza!!! :)

Wow - such a great post, and so REAL. This is my life, my kitchen, and I am guessing many other folks out there, too.

Thanks Sarah! I don't know what you're doing on Saturday, but I'll be organizing my freezer!!!

I used to keep a list of what was in the chest freezer, but didn't keep up with it. (Hangs head in shame.) I have to say, though, sometimes it's nice to be surprised! (in the good way, not in the oh-I-thought-I-had-more-of this-item way.)

I also used to throw out a lot of perishables, but since I've been a local foodie, I make a point to use up everything. It cost too much money and often, it wasn't easy to find.

BTW: you were missed at the Northeast Feast but we're talking about doing a summer thing...

I write down stuff on paper as soon as we return so I have a good idea of what we have. It makes a huge difference. It's mostly perishable items like produce that I get more frequently now that I have a running list.
