Review: Domino Light

Did you know that I have a serious sweet tooth? I do, and I am not afraid to indulge it. But sometimes, it’s really key to cut back where you can. So when I was asked to review the new Domino Light sweetener, it made sense to give it a shot.

So what is it? Domino Light is an all-natural blend of sugar and stevia. With only five calories per serving, it offers much of the sugar flavor without the higher calories. When using it, you use half as much as you would sugar.

Once I had Domino Light in my kitchen, I waited till I ran out of sugar to try it. My first taste was in my morning coffee, and it was okay. Not quite the same as sugar in coffee, but doable. Something you should know about Domino Light? The stevia gives it an anise-ish aftertaste. If you aren’t into that flavor (think black licorice), then you won’t want to use this in your coffee or tea (which is why it was just okay for me in that).

But when it comes to baking, Domino Light can be a great substitute for regular sugar. This is especially true when it comes to rich, flavorful baked goods. I used Domino Light to make a batch of Banana Toffee Muffins (recipe coming Monday!). This is a delicious recipe that I have been working on for weeks. I know the recipe works great with regular sugar, but would it hold up to the substitute? It totally did.

I served these babies to eight people, and none of them noticed that there was a lightened sweetener in the mix. In fact, of the big batch of 16 muffins I made, only 4 remained after breakfast. So, this is definitely something I can see myself slipping into my baked goods to lighten them a bit.

But my coffee still needs regular sugar.

Want to try it? Check out the Domino Sugar Facebook page and click on the coupon tab to download a coupon for Domino Light. There’s also going to be a Twitter party on August 8 from 8-10 pm EST (click here for details) where you can chat about this sweet new product.

Disclosure: I was provided with samples of Domino Light for the purposes of this review and am being compensated for my time. All opinions are my own.

I tried it in my coffee this morning and didn't care for it. I am trying everything possible to replace the caramel syrup in my iced latte, I haven't had any luck yet,;the after taste is horrid. I'm hoping some day I'll get lucky.

I want to add my vote for the no licorice taste detected. I have been using Domino Light for more than two years now, mostly in my black tea or in coffee. Used it in cooking/baking with good results too.

I found your blog when googling Domino Light looking for a cheaper source. I get mine online and it's getting too expensive.

I am glad that I found your cucina bella and now will spend the rest of the morning reading old posts.

I actually just tried this this morning for the first time, I used it in a cup of pomegranate green tea. I thought it was pretty good. I did not taste the liquorice taste you mentioned but maybe the pomegranate was masking it. Tomorrow morning I will give it the true test in my coffee and we will know for sure. I absolutely hate black liquorice so if I had tasted a hint of that I would not have been able to stand it at all.
