Build a Better Breakfast for 2017

Jumpstart your morning eating routine with a breakfast makeover. It’s not about deprivation — it’s about moderation!

As 2016 came to a close, I realized it was time to make healthier choices in my life. I was tired of the weight I’d packed on, tired of how tired it made me feel and tired of making bad choices.

Among my better choices is to eat breakfast again — consistently, everyday, with purpose. Breakfast had fallen by the wayside in my eating life, and I was either skipping it or grabbing a pastry from a place near my office. A breakfast makeover — or maybe overhaul — was in order.

While recent studies aren’t as conclusive about breakfast’s importance, from a personal standpoint, I am more alert, focused and prepared for the day when I eat well in the morning. That’s good enough for me.

Creating an Ideal Breakfast

A sign has hung in my kitchen for years — one I painted on a warm summer day as I started to let my kids be a little more independent in the mornings. It shows three things: fruit, toast and dairy. It’s a guide to crafting breakfast that I made for my kids, and as I started to think about remaking my breakfast habits, I was drawn back to that sign.

Balance: A good breakfast is about balance. Protein, fruit, a grain. It could be a dairy (dairy is a source of protein!) or an egg. It could be fruit or juice or both. It could be cereal or bread or oatmeal or something else.

Moderation: Good breakfasts — satisfying ones, that is — are about moderation. I’d happily eat lots of toast every morning, but that’s neither healthy nor sufficient fuel for my body. Not feeling toast? A mini croissant can feel like a decadent addition to the breakfast plate. But really, it’s small size makes up for it.

Variety: Eating the same thing day in and day out gets, well, boring. Instead, change up your breakfast mix regularly. A slice of toast with a protein — like a hard cooked egg or some cheese — and berries. Yogurt, fruit and granola. Oatmeal with mashed bananas. Make your eggs scrambled. Or hard cooked. Or over easy. Whatever you like.

Give your Juice a Makeover

In addition to what I eat, I also drink a lot with breakfast. Coffee or tea. Ice water. And I love having juice with my breakfast. Being hydrated? It’s super important. That’s where Trop50 Juice Beverage comes into play. Trop50 offers the great-tasting goodness of orange juice with 50% less sugar and calories. Squeezed from fresh oranges, each 8-oz glass provides 100% of your vitamin C needs and has no artificial sweetener — just how I like it!

And, perhaps best, it’s delicious. And when it comes to anything you eat or drink, tasting good is essential

I eat bfast every morning. I'm a fan of homemade granola w/ soy milk... or w/ a recent addiction: goat milk. Yum! Eggs on the weekend. Thanks for the Trop50 mention. Didn't know about that and sugar is a primary reason why I avoid OJ.

Sounds tasty! Granola with milk is one of my daughter's favorite breakfasts.

This morning I had overnight oats for breakfast, which I like because I make it the night before and it's easily transportable to work.
