Going After Her Dream: Shekinah Monee

This year, we are all about the inspiration on Sarah by the Sea, so on Fridays I will be featuring inspiring women in Friday Q&As. This is one of my very favorite features, and I hope you love it too.

Meet Shekinah Monee, a Brooklyn, NY, woman who is going after her dream of being a successful entertainer and creating a top branding company (check out her business here!). “I initially started out in the law enforcement industry, but couldn’t let go of the urge to model/act and do public relations,” says Monee. So she went for it, and now she is based in New York and Atlanta, working with clients in entertainment, fashion and pageantry as a brand strategist and also modeling.

Why is important to you to go after your dream?

Shekinah Monee: Growing up I was always told to follow my dreams. At some point in college I decided that I wasn’t going to do what everyone thought I should, and actually heed to that advice. I knew that I never wanted to have regrets.

What are your must-reads for inspiration and motivation?

SM: Every morning I get an email from Our Daily Bread. Depending on when I go to sleep it is either the last or the first thing I read in a day (it comes in at midnight). It allows me time to reflect on the goodness of God. Reading Bible passages also reminds me to slow down and enjoy the treasures in life. I love to also be encouraged by those I follow on twitter.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve received?

SM: The best piece of advice I received was from my grandmother. She always said, “Don’t allow people to waste your time, because they are wasting your life.” This is a reminder to not take things so seriously, not to cry over spilled milk, and to make every day count.

Who inspires you and why?

SM: My ultimate inspiration is my grandmother. She was wise, honest, creative, and spiritual. She was the epitome of an amazing woman. She was everything I dream of being. My mother inspires me as well, because she sacrificed so much for me to be where I am today.

What’s the first thing you do every morning?

SM: Every morning, I say a prayer to God, and thank Him for allowing me the opportunity to do better today than I did yesterday. I then read Our Daily Bread, stretch and head to the shower.

Thank you to Shekinah Monee! Tune in every Friday for interviews with women going after their dreams.
