Making healthy choices is important to me as a mom and as a woman. I believe that wellness is something we should pursue all the time, so when my family moved to Maine we started taking nature walks, hikes, swims and more.
One of the things that really appealed to me about Maine before we moved here was the active lifestyle so many people live. From hiking to trail running to swimming, so many people are out and about all the time. There are trails and all sorts of natural spaces to walk, hike and jog — and some are even in more urban areas. There’s just so much opportunity to get out and do things.
When we moved here, I quickly started checking out all the natural settings we could — while its warm. We love the water, so we often head to walking paths near rivers and streams for walks. And while we’re there, we might just skip a few rocks too … it’s fun! We’ve also swam in Maine lakes.
But there is so much more for us to explore here in Maine. From Acadia National Park to Mount Katahdin, our exploration to-do list is pretty long. What I love about all of it though is that when you are out doing, being active is easy. And that’s one of the lessons I try to impart in my kids — making healthy choices is easy when you love the outdoors like we do.
And as someone who has made 2014 all about being healthier, I am happy that I can share this with my kids. This year, I have lost nearly 30 pounds by making better wellness choices. And I want to continue that by being an active family so I can maintain my loss.
Of course, winter is coming soon … and that means hiking will give way to other healthy activities. We have plans to try snowshoeing, ice skating and more. But we’ll also take advantage of indoor pools for swimming too. Being healthy is an everyday thing — not just a fair-weather plan.
And for me, I tap into tools to help me be healthier all the time — Like the Walgreens app for my iPhone. I’ve been a member of their customer program Balance Rewards for years, but this new-to-me app is a great way to track your fitness and health goals. And better yet, you earn points for using the app to track your good wellness choices — like exercising. I can earn 20 points just for walking my kids to the bus stop (it’s not that close!). And those points? They translate into savings when I run to Walgreens for toothpaste, bottled water and more — you know, more healthy choices! For every 5,000 points you earn $5 to spend at Walgreens.
To use the app, simply download it from the app store and set up your Balance Rewards account on it. If you already have a card, you can just enter the info here or you can set up a new account. Then find the BR for healthy choices option on the app and start entering your data to earn points. It’s so easy.
