When there was still snow and ice on the ground, a new friend suggested I visit Acadia National Park here in Maine to hike. As someone who’d only moved here in the past year and whose previous hiking experience included pretty much none, I snapped a photo of my stilettos and joked that I was already wearing my hiking boots (or, in other words, no way!).
I mean, I’m the girl who “camps” in cabins with running water and electricity.
But a few weeks later, when a colleague told me about a whimsical (and easy!) trail named Wonderland at Acadia I changed my mind. Might as well embrace where we live, right? Together with my kids — Will, 9, and Paige, 7, — I headed out there on one of the first warm days of the year.
The trail winds through the woods, past a rock ledge and interestingly shaped tree branches before reaching the shore. It was so peaceful there. Between the easy, relaxed hike and the breathtaking view of the ocean, we all promptly fell in love with hiking, Maine and Acadia. Seriously, it happened just like that.
Since then, I bought a season pass to the park and have hiked Wonderland and Ship Harbor each twice, and even climbed (um, I mean hiked up) Gorham Mountain. And with this newfound love of hiking has come a greater love of the outdoors.
Whenever it’s nice out, and the kids are home, I try to do something fun outdoors with them — from spontaneous trips to the lake to outdoor movies to hikes closer to home. Winter in Maine is fleeting, so it’s important to make the most of the warmth while its here. It will be snowy again too soon.
And while we’re active and enjoying the warmth, it’s also the perfect time for cool treats — like Nestle Outshine Bars, which have so many options to choose from including Outshine Simply Yogurt Bars, Outshine Coconut Water Bars, Outshine Fruit Bars and Outshine Fruit and Veggie Bars.
Made with simple ingredients — including fresh fruit, veggies and yogurt — these bars are a refreshing snack, perfect for warm summer days. My kids have been big fans of the fruit bars for years, particularly the strawberry and grape ones.
And this summer at our local Walmart, we discovered the creamy, new Simply Yogurt bars in strawberry, which Will loves. After a few bites, he declared them “incredible.”
Are you an Outshine fan too? Right now (and through July 31), Outshine is also running a “Outsmart your Snack” quiz and sweepstakes. It’s based on the idea that healthy snacks can be found in unusual or unexpected places — including the freezer aisle. Check it out to get a $1 off coupon a variety pack of Outshine Snacks. The company will also help provide 1 lb of produce to local food banks for your participation.
