Over the weekend, Will and I had the opportunity to meet soccer star Brandi Chastain, who won two Women’s World Cup championships, two Olympic gold medals and an Olympic silver medal playing soccer. She’s best remembered for that emotional moment in 1999 on the field when her team won the Women’s World Cup at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, against China, and she ripped off her jersey and fell to her knees in just her sports bra in excitement. Chastain was in East Hartford, Connecticut, presenting a donation to a soccer club there from Libby’s Fruit and Vegetables and also teaching the soccer players from the club a few things about the game.
(Although Will looks anything but thrilled in the picture, he was actually pretty excited to pick up a few pointers to up his game. He’s been playing soccer since he was 4 and absolutely loves it.)
Before presenting the check, Chastain spoke to the kids and the bloggers there a little about what the game has meant to her. Like Will and the other kids there, she’s played since childhood. “This is how I grew up. Every great moment I have in life has to do with coming to the soccer field, winning some games, losing some games,” Chastain said. “For all the young players out here this is the beginning of many great things for you.”
Chastain urged the kids to make good choices on and off the field. “Ultimately each and every one of us have the opportunity to impact someone else’s life in a positive way,” Chastain said. “Tell your teammates how great they are.”
She also demonstrated a move to fake out your opponent — Will, who loves learning new “moves,” was really into it (especially since she used him as an example, pretending to be about to kick the ball at him so he’d flinch and she could move in a different direction).
Meeting Chastain was an exciting thing and Libby’s put on a fun event for the kids from the East Hartford Soccer Club.
There were even snacks!
Special thanks to The Motherhood and Libby’s for inviting us to this event!
