When I am thinking of what might brighten a dull day or what dinner would be perfect for a busy evening, my mind often goes to pizza. Pizza is comfort food for me, and it's something I love to make at home (though a good pizza parlor pie is always wonderful.
(It should probably come as no surprise that I love to make pizza at home. I did, after all, write an entire book about it.)
So when Don Pepino asked if I'd be willing to play with their pizza sauce and write about it, I gave a quick and enthusiastic yes. They, in turn, sent me several cans of their pizza sauce (thanks for that!).
Immediately, I knew I wanted to make a grilled pizza. It's one of my favorite methods of pizza making because it's quick, easy and reliable. But it's also always tasty.

This Grilled Fresh Tomato and Sausage Pizza comes together so quickly. You'll want to prep all your ingredients before you even turn on the grill. That way you're ready to cook, assemble and cook some more during this rapid process.

This pizza has it all: juicy tomatoes, bright basil, meaty sausage, plenty of cheese and a great sauce. It's perfect for enjoying with friends or as a family, but you can totally make it for yourself too. Cold pizza is a great leftover.
Grilled Fresh Tomato and Sausage Pizza
This delightful grilled pizza is topped with bright tomatoes and basil, meaty sausage and plenty of sauce and cheese. For best results, prep all your ingredients before you begin cooking.
Ingredients
- cornmeal
- 1 ball pizza dough
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 ½ cups Don Pepino pizza sauce, divided
- 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 3 links sweet Italian sausage, cooked and sliced
- 1 cup halved grape tomatoes
- ¼ cup fresh basil, sliced
- 2 tablespoons grated romano cheese
Instructions
- Sprinkle a pizza paddle with cornmeal.
- Using your hands, stretch the pizza dough into a large, round, thin circle (about 14-inches round). Place on the cornmeal on the pizza paddle and prick all over with a fork. Brush with olive oil.
- Prepare your grill by cleaning your grates thoroughly. Heat on high heat to good and hot and carefully spray the grill with cooking oil spray so the pizza doesn't stick.
- Transfer the dough to the grill and close the grill lid. Cook for 3-4 minutes, opening the lid and using the pizza peel to gently check the bottom two or three times, until the bottom has visible, deeply golden grill marks and the crust is lightly browned all over the bottom.
- Use the pizza peel to flip the dough. Brush the top with 1 cup pizza sauce and then sprinkle with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, the sausage slices and the grape tomatoes.
- Cover the grill and cook for an additional 3 minutes.
- Top the pizza with the remaining 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, ½ cup of pizza sauce and the basil. Close the lid and cook for 2-3 minutes more, checking the bottom to ensure it doesn't overcook.
- Use the pizza peel to remove the pizza from the grill. Top with romano cheese. Let sit for 5 minutes and then cut with a pizza wheel into 8 slices.
Disclosure: As mentioned in the post, I was provided with four cans of pizza sauce in exchange for this post and related social media posts. All opinions, flavors, etc are my own.
