Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing

This tangy, rich Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing is perfect for salads, dipping and more. And it’s so easy to make too!

When I was in high school, home economics — everyone called it home ec — seemed like the most useless of classes. What could I possibly learn, I thought? I didn’t think I’d ever need the cooking or sewing lessons it would impart and I certainly didn’t care to carry around an egg for a week to see what parenthood is like.

It was more than that, I gather now, but at the time it seemed like a dated concept that wouldn’t benefit my modern life.

Decades later, I wonder how things would have been different if I took it. Would I have been better prepared to run my household or manage my home if I’d been opened to the concept of home economy? Would I have mastered pie crust before 42? Would I have wanted to cook sooner?

Truth is that it might not have changed anything.

But maybe it would have. Maybe it would have made me a master of waste-free living and frugal purchasing. Who knows?

I’ve been reading The American Frugal Housewife by Lydia Marie Child, first published in 1828, recently and I was surprised to find advice that’s as pertinent now as it was when it was written. One thing that really stuck out to me was this: “Nothing is cheap that we do not want.”

It’s made me think about what we really need. It’s easy to buy clamshells of cookies and bottles of condiments. But do we need them? Is it what we really want?

When you make your own dressing from a trusted recipe you are getting what you want — and perhaps even getting something better than what you could buy.

Maybe this could be the recipe to start with.

Creamy, tangy, sharp … this Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing recipe has a bit of everything. And it’s absolutely perfect for drizzling on salads or dipping hot wings in.

Making your own dressings? That’s smart home economy with a delicious result. Not only do you control the quality and freshness of the ingredients, but you also control the flavor and quantity. Make as much or as little as you need. Waste less.

For this, you can shape the end result with your choice of cheese — from a milder blue cheese to an extra sharp gorgonzola, the possibilities are endless.

Making this Buttermilk Blue Cheese Dressing recipe is also wonderful because it’s so simple. Just stir together the ingredients and then let it chill until you’re ready to use it. Easy peasy.
